Piece Description
Medium: Photography
Dimensions: 3 ft by 2 ft
This piece is about the dead whale that washed up on shore in the Philippines with 40kg of plastic found in its stomach. This piece is about the sea turtles that are dead due to their mistaking plastic for food. This piece is about the thousands of marine life that are injured, maimed, or killed due to the never-ending buildup of marine pollution. “Trash” is an attempt to spotlight an issue that society continues to ignore when we are the source of the problem.
My intention with “Trash” was to show that we are both perpetrators and victims of marine pollution. I hope to raise awareness and encourage viewers to take action to prevent further damage to our ecosystems. This piece is a physical representation of this issue, and is sculpted out of trash to showcase our role in this problem. The photographs I took at the beach place us at the scene of the crime, and bring a sense of reality and unfiltered truth to the desperation and damage caused by marine pollution and our hand in it.
