“J Tree” is a video that is centered around the abstract concept of time. The inspiration for this piece was Joshua Tree, as it is a town that alters, or altered, my sense of time and reality. Free from the brazen symphony of the city, Joshua Tree is open, a negative space removed from my busy-normal. Every second there felt like a minute, every minute an hour, and every hour a day. During my trip, I thought about the subjectivity of time, and how everyone experiences time in a different manner. In this piece, I explore my own perception of time and the way I generally feel and experience it. I attempt to capture the anxiety of the last 10 minutes of school through a four second pause, the hectic rush before bed through a mash up of different clips, and the abrupt serenity and peace of sleep through the slow pan of the desert. I mimicked my daily progression through the progression of the video to subject the audience to my rhythm of time and its complexities.
