 Piece Description

Medium: Mixed Media Sculpture

Dimensions: 4 ft by 2 ft

One part of the playground that I found myself drawn to was the animal panel. Whenever the playground became overrun and busy, I would wait for the chaos to pan out, and would mix and match the different animals or people that were on that particular equipment. With “Animal Panel” I convey the assortment of identities that pertain to my inherently different cultures and the struggle I had to “fit in”. I do this through three characters, two deriving from Korean mythology and one from Chinese mythology. Although the American aspect of my identity is not conveyed through the characters, I represent that with the animal panel itself. America is the structure that contains and shaped my identity as it is the country and culture I predominantly experienced growing up. The panels in this piece spin as well, and I did this not just to accurately portray an experience of an animal panel, but to show how people have the power to influence which part of my identity is presented.
