Oil: indiscriminately consuming all in its path, a black mass of death and destruction seeping into all cracks of life. There have been 62 spills, or 7 tonnes and over, of oil spilled into the ocean in the past decade. Although seemingly small in comparison to the size of the ocean, the damage is monumental. Entire marine ecosystems have been destroyed beyond saving and apathetically classified as collateral damage to the mistakes of man. Unable to escape, the life of the sea has been overwhelmed, trapped in a world of despair. In “Oil”, I attempt to capture the pain, the impending feeling of doom and the damage that we cause to our marine life. I do so by making a wave of oil out of human arms and hands reaching and staggering over a human figure to show how we are the ones making this problem a reality. I chose a time based narrative to instill a sense of drama leading to the climax which reveals the problem at hand. The purpose of this piece was to raise awareness through empathy, to encourage others to take action, and consider their role in the problem that affects the lives of others.
