Over the course of joint human and animal history, animals have become subject to the rule of man. This ceramic piece addresses the consequences following the mistreatment of animals through selective breeding. Selective breeding, or artificial selection, is the manmade act of deciding which animals may reproduce in order to achieve specifically desired traits. Another consequential side effect with artificial selection are congenital defects. Congenital defects vary from severe health issues to physical deformities that may inconvenience or harm the animal.
I chose ceramic because it is shaped by others and molded to fit their desires. It is soft when wet, hard when dried, and requires a process that when handled incorrectly can blow up into a million pieces. I chose a human form in order to instill a sense of empathy instead of sympathy, for empathy drives people to make a difference to act instead of just hoping for the best, for all change starts somewhere.
